- Canada leading Venezuela 1-0 at Copa America
- Jacob Shaffelburg strikes to put Canada in front
- Winners will play Argentina for a place in the final
Venezuela are getting closer
63' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Venezuela are up to 22 crosses now – the record this tournament is 29, and there is half an hour to go. They have had some decent moments from hopeful, lofted crosses that have been rescued by Rondon and Bello in the middle – they just need that penalty-box pinball to drop their way.

60' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Venezuela make the game's first sub, bringing Jhonder Cádiz on for Cristian Cásseres Jr. in what is an attacking change.

Venezuela are still in this

56' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
In a funny way, Venezuela have to be pretty happy with their position in this game. Canada have created enough chances to put them to bed, so just to still be in contention is some kind of victory.
They do, though, have to start hurting Canada in attacking areas. Just as I type that, the ball falls to Jose Martinez, who blazes over with the goal at his mercy. Should do better, but at least it's a chance.

Venezuela's turn to miss a big chance
54' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
The end-to-end chances continue as moments after Larin's big miss, Martinez does likewise from close range at the opposite end of the pitch.
Cornelius' booking could help Rondon
53' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
That was a very silly card to draw for Derek Cornelius a few minutes ago. It looked like the ball had already passed him and Soteldo was already on his way to the ground when he swung out.
That could be big for the thus-far-contained Salomón Rondón, who has been pretty quiet today but now has a marking defender who has already been cautioned.
Big miss by Larin!

52' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Larin has a massive chance to double Canada's lead with a open first-time shot from the top of the box, but misses the target entirely!
Cornelius booked
50' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Cornelius catches Soteldo late and is shown the second yellow card of the match, joining Shaffelburg on a booking.
Venezuela nearly catch Canada napping

47' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Venezuela quickly take a throw-in and almost catch Canada's defense napping. Soteldo nearly has a great chance from point-blank range but the defense recovers just in time to nick the ball off his foot.

Shaffelburg’s role on the left
The Athletic
HT: Venezuela 0-1 Canada
If you squint, the convex made on Jacob Shaffelburg’s touch plot looks like a heart.
The Nashville SC winger has been vital to Canada so far. It must be great playing left wing for Canada these days — focus on the flank will drift to Alphonso Davies, and final third marking drifts toward Jonathan David.

HT: Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Jacob Shaffelburg has now scored three goals for Canada, all of which have come in knockout matches:
- 2023 Gold Cup quarterfinal vs USA
- 2024 Copa America qualifying vs Trinidad and Tobago
- 2024 Copa America quarterfinal vs Venezuela
Brilliant entertainment so far

HT: Venezuela 0-1 Canada
This has been a fantastic spectacle, largely owing to a relentless physical battle. Jon Aramburu has made some excellent tackles while Alistair Johnston has been engaged in a fierce battle with Yeferson Soteldo on the opposite flank.
Both sides have been really no-nonsense in attack too, and that’s not going to change as the time ticks on and Venezuela get more desperate. The second half should be just as intense!
New life for Canada's attack

HT: Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Canada recorded four shots on target in the first half, more than they registered across the entire 90 minutes of any of their three group-stage matches.

Venezuela mount two more attacks in the closing minutes of the first half. The first sees a decent shooting chance blocked by a defender, before the second sees Soteldo muscled off the ball near the corner of the box. This referee has definitely allowed for plenty of physical play so far.
Plenty of action still to come in the second half!

Plenty of stoppages in this first half yields four extra minutes here.
Action all over the pitch
45' Venezuela 0-1 Canada
Two great plays in a matter of seconds as Shaffelburg has a great first touch to control a long ball and dart into the Venezuela box, before Aramburu dispossesses him with a perfect tackle in the penalty area.
Moments later Laryea and Rondon are at each other's throats, having to be separated by the referee. You can't take your eyes off this match, one of the best of this tournament so far!
